There is nothing petite about this monumental mass setting, which Rossini wrote following a thirty-year self-imposed retirement from composing opera. It is a tour-de-force for chorus and soloists alike, and is one of the many reasons Rossini earned the respect of his dear friend Giuseppe Verdi. We present the piece in its original—and Rossini’s preferred—form: chamber choir accompanied by two pianos and harmonium, with four vocal soloists.
