Concerto with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - concert 2
| August 9, 2010 | ||
| 6:30 pm |
To mark the Schumann bicentenary in 2010, Johannes Fritzsch and the MSO join Australian soloists for two major works celebrating the orchestral genius of a composer who gloried in the depiction of feeling and passion. Li-Wei, praised by the New York Times for his “meltingly beautiful tone, flawless intonation and an ironclad technique,” returns to Melbourne to play the ravishingly beautiful Cello Concerto, while Melbourne’s own Amir Farid is soloist in the rarely-heard Introduction and Allegro Appassionato, written when Schumann was under the spell of Byron’s storm-tossed poetry. These pieces are framed by masterworks which, in turn, inspired, and were inspired by Schumann’s achievements: Mendelssohn’s magnificent concert overture and the sunset glow of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3.
Date: Monday 9th August, 2010
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Melbourne Town Hall, Cnr Swanston and Collins St, Melbourne.
Program:
- MENDELSSOHN Calm Sea & Prosperous Voyage
- SCHUMANN Cello Concerto in A minor, Op.129
- SCHUMANN Introduction and Allegro appassionato
- BRAHMS Symphony No.3 in F major, Op.90

‘One glance at Schubert’s Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again’ — Robert Schumann
The first performance of Schubert’s Op.99 Trio was at an informal gathering of his friends - diary accounts recall much drinking, dancing and high spirits! Paul Shoenfield’s 1987 hit ‘Café Music’ was written with exactly this sort of merriment in mind. Combining elements of Viennese, gypsy and Broadway styles, Paul Schoenfield’s witty take on high class dinner music is a rollicking rollercoaster of
musical fun.

Benaud Trio 2010 Series Concert 3 - ‘Majesty’
| August 16, 2010 | ||
| 6:00 pm |
Mozart and Brahms both used formal structures to focus their immense creative energies. The Benaud Trio compare and contrast masterpieces by these two like-minded composers. While Mozart writes melodies that are elegant, uncomplicated and beautiful beyond words, Brahms’ Trio is sonorous, turbulent then triumphant, with a majesty that few others can match.

Benaud Trio 2010 Series Concert 2 - ‘Homeland’
| May 17, 2010 | ||
| 6:00 pm |
‘Music is an incredibly powerful resource whose spiritual potential is due for a huge revival’ — Ross Edwards
My Homeland celebrates composers who have responded creatively to their country. Ross Edwards has a distinct musical voice, his music deeply rooted in Australian culture and the sounds of its natural environment. Similarly, Smetana was one of the great bohemian nationalists of the 19th century. His music drips with the spirit and beautiful melodies of Czech folk music. Smetana’s Piano Trio is laced
with gypsy fire but also tinged with deep pathos.
